By the time we get to senior leadership positions in corporate America, most of us get extensive training on how to give feedback to our employees. We have been taught methods like SBI: Situation, Behavior, Impact. We have been trained how to write feedback that is fair, helpful, and grounded in facts. We have role-played every imaginable scenario for how a feedback conversation might go and how an employee might respond to tough feedback. This training has undoubtedly made us better managers and leaders.
Yet, we are rarely taught how to receive feedback well. In fact, it is really hard to receive feedback when it feels unfair or inaccurate. We wonder if the manager delivering the feedback ever went through the feedback-giving training that we did! When the feedback we receive feels unfair, we argue with it and reject it as untrue. We ruminate about it at night. We feel bad about ourselves and mad at the person who delivered it.
In this salon, former senior Tech executive Elena Krasnoperova discusses how to receive feedback well, even if (and especially if) it is inaccurate and unfair.
You will learn about three distinct types of feedback that you receive at work (and at home); about your temperament and how you're biologically wired to respond to positive and negative feedback; how to pause the internal monologue about the accuracy and fairness of feedback so that you can really hear the feedback; how to "interview" the feedback-giver so that you can gather all the facts about their perspective; how to come back to the feedback when you are ready (even if it is days later!) to sort it into the buckets of useful and not useful; and how to turn even the most unfair feedback into a powerful learning opportunity.
Learning how to receive feedback well will not only supercharge your career, but can also help you be a better spouse, daughter, mother, and friend. We hope you will join us for this informative salon.
Elena Krasnoperova recently wrapped up a successful 25+ year-long career in Tech, where in her last job as a VP of Ads Analytics at Meta she led a team of 1,500+ data scientists and data engineers. Now, as the Founder of WoW Bay Area, Elena helps successful professional women (aka Women of Wisdom) discover their "ikigai" and live a life filled with purpose and joy. Elena also advises early- and mid-stage Tech startups on getting to product-market fit, finding traction, and growing revenue. Elena holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford. In her spare time, Elena teaches Zumba at the Y, sharing the love of music and Latin dance. She also loves to travel, read, and connect with interesting people.

We have an incredible community of female leaders at Athena and we want to bring you closer together! Join a Peer Group and build a network of peers you can engage with for guidance, lessons learned and insights around a shared interest. Choose a topic that most interests you or drop in and out of multiple peer groups as it suits you best. You’ll find at least one peer group available to join every week. Each live session goes for one hour, no preparation is needed, just show up as you are. We look forward to seeing you there!
A Learning Circle is an opportunity to connect with a small group of other Athena members in a focused yet casual setting, creating accountability around targeted learning to assist you in achieving your goals. Over the course of 6 sessions, club members will meet every 2 weeks to participate in an organic, peer-led discussion of the session's "chapters" consisting of 1-2 Athena salons which are to be reviewed on your own prior to the group session. When joining, members are committing to completing all 6 sessions.
Typically led by one of Athena's coaches, networking events provide members an opportunity to meet one another in a smaller intimate and virtual setting.
These are typically in-person events led by Coco and our partnering companies on topics that are relevant to the industry and audience of our business partners.
A workshop is an interactive session for members to actively practice something, such as their pitch. These sessions typically involve breakout rooms, member to member feedback and are not recorded.
For members new to Athena looking for ways to engage, these bi-weekly orientations led by an Athena Member Success Manager, provide a live tour of Athena, member success insights, and a chance to get questions answered.
Athena customizes virtual learning events with expert business leaders tailored to a unique company’s needs. These events cultivate cross-functional community, development, and learning across the partner organization.
Athena listens and we're always adding new event types and opportunities for members to engage. See what new events we are currently offering members.
